Conceptual redevelopment study 2017-18
Implementation phase #1 2018-19
Werl, Westphalia, Germany

The Museum Forum der Voelker was founded 1913 as a missionary museum of the Franciscan Order and moved in 1962 into new premises in Werl, North Rhine-Westphalia. Since, it developed from a colonial institution towards a modern ethnological museum.

The Franciscan Order is planning to vacate its convent in Werl and, as a result, also sign off the museum. However, the fraternity generously offered to donate the museum and its collection, if a public body would take over responsibility. The redevelopment study aims to provide both a concept and a strategy to safeguard the future of the museum under the umbrella of a new foundation based on public-private partnership.

At this point, corporations active in the region are gathering funds and setting up a foundation in cooperation with the city of Werl. Thus, the Museum Forum der Voelker is on verge to enter a new stage in its history, at once carefully restructuring the collection and open it up for new forms of dialogue, embracing as well contemporary art and architecture.
